Abstract
European diseases had a significant impact on the Tongva of the Los Angeles basin and the Chumash along the Santa Barbara coast in the second half of the 18th century. Southern California Indians partly internalized the diseases, seeking to interpret the impact of the diseases in a way they could understand. They adhered firmly to their Native religious beliefs, and their responses to the diseases can only be understood within the framework of California Indian cultures and religions.
