Instructional Materials for Immigration Scholars ^

This website -- whose creation was funded by the UCLA Office of Instructional Development -- is designed to help researchers in international migration enrich their teaching through the use of multimedia in the classroom. By multimedia we mean web-acessible scholarly sources and databases as well as maps, graphs, tables, photos, and timelines we have collected or made and are ready-to-use. We have tried to create as many presentable products as possible and chose resources that do not presuppose knowledge of a standard statistical software package (like Stata or SPSS). Please note that because this project began as a local resource for the department here at UCLA, some data resources may point to links that are only accessible with a UCLA IP address. All UCLA students and faculty can easily configure their home computer to access these sites by following the steps outlined by Bruin Online Services. The materials provided at this site are organized into six general categories:

• PRESENTABLE PRODUCTS:
  • Classroom Excercises: A set of classroom excercises that walk students step by step through the process of describing an ethnic neighborhood in Los Angeles.

  • Printable Tables and Graphs: Tables and Graphs we made from IPUMS, Current Population Survey, and historical Census data, as well as many gathered from other sources.

  • Printable Maps and Pictures Maps created by GIS and online applications, as well as gathered from other sources. Ready to print or download in .jpg or .gif format.

• ANNOTATED LIST OF WEB RESOURCES: An annotated list of web resources and compiled data related to international migration.

• LOCAL RESOURCES AT UCLA: Descriptions of and links to local programs and people who can provide support for students and faculty who study immigration.

• WEB BASED DATA ANALYSIS: Descriptions of and links to sites which allow easy statistical manipulation online, so you can create and save/print your own graphs, tables, and maps with point-and-click software.

• ONLINE ACCESS TO IMMIGRATION RELATED JOURNALS: This page provides links to leading immigration journals that UCLA faculty and students can access easily and for free while on a UCLA server.

• RAW DATA: This page provides raw numerical immigration data in excel format as well as links to online data repositories.
