Served in 1776 under Capt. Hubley and in 1777 under Capts. Petrie and Wurtz in guarding prisoners at the Lancaster barracks. Served as a substitute for Daniel Whitelock, John Krider, and Mathias Markley. In 1778 he was in service and in 1780 under Capt. Matthew McDonald of Philadelphia. Granted a pension by the United States on March 23, 1833 (Pension file #11,090). His application for pension shows that he served as militia guard of prisoners at Lancaster barracks in 1776-7; was in "Flying Camp" and at battles of Princeton, Trenton, and Germantown.
In 1794, durin ghte Whisky Insurrection, he was enrolled under Capital John Reitzel's company, Lieut. Col Stevenson's regiment of Pennsylvania Militia, and marched to Pittsburgh with the company, which was mustered in Nov. 3, 1794 and discharged Dec. 12, 1794. Tried to enlist during the war of 1812, but was refused because of his age.1

Obituary: Walter Glenn Liddell, 90, of Redstone Highland in Greensburg, died Monday at Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. Born Dec. 4, 1905, in West Sunbury, he was the son of William and Della (Glenn) Liddell. He attended the University of Pittsburgh and graduated from Penn State University. Mr. Liddell taught school for a brief time. In addition, he had been executive vice president of the Peterson System of Directed Handwriting until his retirement. He was a member and former elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Greensburg. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Maritime Service. He was a former president of the Pennsylvania Education Salesman's Club and was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He also belonged to Philanthropy Lodge 225 F & AM, Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of the Valley of Pittsburgh and Syria Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. of Pittsburgh. Surviving are his wife, Louise L. Liddell; a daughter, Diane Liddell Hunt of New Orleans, La; and a granddaughter. He was preceded in death by two sisters. Friends of Walter Glenn Liddell, who died Monday, Aug. 12, 1996 will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Kepple-Graft Funeral Home, 524 N. Main St., Greensburg. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church of Greensburg. Burial will follow at Westmoreland County Memorial Park, Hempfield Township. Memorial donations may be made to First Presbyterian Church 300 S. Main St., Greensburg, PA 15601; or to Redstone Highlands, 6 Garden Center Drive, Greensburg, PA 15601. Obituary: Walter Glenn Liddell, 90, of Redstone Highland in Greensburg, died Monday at Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. Born Dec. 4, 1905, in West Sunbury, he was the son of William and Della (Glenn) Liddell. He attended the University of Pittsburgh and graduated from Penn State University. Mr. Liddell taught school for a brief time. In addition, he had been executive vice president of the Peterson System of Directed Handwriting until his retirement. He was a member and former elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Greensburg. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Maritime Service. He was a former president of the Pennsylvania Education Salesman's Club and was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He also belonged to Philanthropy Lodge 225 F & AM, Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of the Valley of Pittsburgh and Syria Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. of Pittsburgh. Surviving are his wife, Louise L. Liddell; a daughter, Diane Liddell Hunt of New Orleans, La; and a granddaughter. He was preceded in death by two sisters. Friends of Walter Glenn Liddell, who died Monday, Aug. 12, 1996 will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Kepple-Graft Funeral Home, 524 N. Main St., Greensburg. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church of Greensburg. Burial will follow at Westmoreland County Memorial Park, Hempfield Township. Memorial donations may be made to First Presbyterian Church 300 S. Main St., Greensburg, PA 15601; or to Redstone Highlands, 6 Garden Center Drive, Greensburg, PA 15601.
