Samuel was born in 1780 in Butler county, Pa, where his parents had lived previous to their settlement in Venango county. In 1824 he settled upon a farm where his son, David now lives, on the Allegheny river, one mile northeast of Emlenton. He married Margaret Thompson who bore him five children: James, Christina Ann, Isabella, Mary, and David. His wife died in 1810 and he married Rachel Haggerty, by whom he had four children: James, John, Thomas, and Margaret. On the death of his second wife he married Betsey McAfee, to whom four children were born: Caleb, Samuel, Jane, and matthew B. Samuel Russell, Sr., was a lieutenant in a company from Butler county in the war of 1812. They had issue: John Sloan: William mar Francis Nesbit; Robert (above) mar. Mary McBrayer and Jane mar. William Oats. The widow, Ann Means Sloan, mar. 2nd John Wason, who was killed by Indians in 1756, and his wife taken captive. They had Thomas; James; Elizabeth. The above Robert Sloan moved to Westmoreland Co., Penna., and his will, dated 1812, prob., 1816, names dau. Susannah Sloan; son John Sloan; Ann; Elisabeth; Susannah; Mary; John; Dau. Ann Cowden's children; dau. Elizabeth McCle?on; dau. Mary Cowden; son-in-law John Sloan of Bedford Co, Penna. and my son John Sloan of Westmoreland Co., Penna. Under Votes of Assembly, Nov. 10, 1860, is a bill for five ounds, "Ann Wasden (Wasson) to take her to Conococheague." In 1769, Ann was living with Jane and William Oats. The above Robert Sloan moved to Westmoreland Co., Penna., and his will, dated 1812, prob., 1816, names dau. Susannah Sloan; son John Sloan; Ann; Elisabeth; Susannah; Mary; John; Dau. Ann Cowden's children; dau. Elizabeth McCle?on; dau. Mary Cowden; son-in-law John Sloan of Bedford Co, Penna. and my son John Sloan of Westmoreland Co., Penna. Under Votes of Assembly, Nov. 10, 1860, is a bill for five ounds, "Ann Wasden (Wasson) to take her to Conococheague." In 1769, Ann was living with Jane and William Oats. 1783, and some old papers are in possession of a descendant. One John Sloan was in Shippensburg in 1733.
