Katherine Chennell Dies Unexpectedly

Katherine Roy Chennell, lifelong resident of Sterling, died unexpectedly at her home here early Wednesday morning at the age of 74. Death was attributed to a heart attack. She had
been hospitalized recently with a heart condition.

Mrs. Chennell, widow of the late Howard R. Chennell, sr., was born Sterling on September 15, 1893 and attended the local schools, including a year at Sterling College. She was married in Sterling on June 15 1921, to Mr. Chennell and the couple lived here all of their married life excepting for four years in San francisco.

Mrs. Chennell was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, D.A.R., chapter W, P.E.O., and the Christian Science Society of Lyons, and the Friday Bridge Club.

Surviving are one son, Howard R., Chennell of Fairway, Kansas; four grandchildren, Howard III, Grahame Elizabeth and Emily; two sisters, Miss Edith Roy, who made her home with Mrs. Chennell, and Mrs. C. B. Hodge of Sterling.

An outgoing person with many friends, Mrs. Chennell was known by the community as "Katy." A fine singer, she had been in demand, as a vocalist at weddings and funerals. Over the years she had sung at literally hundreds of funerals. She had also sung professionally in San Francisco and, in other towns in this area. I

A personal hobby was the remembering of birthdays, anniversaries and other occasions with greeting cards. Over the years she had, mailed cards by the thousands.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Porter-Sillin. She was born on 15 September 1893 at Sterling, KS. She married Howard Russell CHENNELL on 15 June 1921. Katherine Mary ROY died in 1972 at Sterling, KS.

M. C. ROY HAS PASSED AWAY

Well Known Resident Died Monday and Will be Laid to Rest Saturday Afternoon in Sterling

M. C. Roy, one of the oldest and best known residents of Sterling died at
his home on Monroe street, Tuesday noon, He had been suffering with heart trouble for some time and for the past three weeks his condition had been serious. During the past week he had been confined to his bed.
While Mr. Roy was but sixty-nine years old, he had spent, most of his life here and was counted one of the older residents of the city. For years he traveled for the Chase Candy Co. and as their representative he made a very-large circle of friends over state. On account of ill health he gave up that work about a year ago and has since spent his time at home.
He leaves his devoted wile, one son, and four daughters. The son lives in Pittsburg; his daughters, Mrs. Alice Hodge, Mrs. Catherine Chennell and Miss Edith Roy, here in Sterling; and
Mrs. Bess Gast, of Wichita. The latter was at home on a visit during her father's last illness and death. Mrs. Hodge is in Yellowstone Park and at time of going to press no word had
been received from her.
While funeral arrangements have not been completed, the plan is now to hold the services Saturday afternoon, probably at four o'clock. The obituarv will be published next week.

     Morris John ROY married Mary Elizabeth PENTLETON, daughter of John E. PENTLETON and Sarah McFERRON, at Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, PA. Morris John ROY was buried at St. Mary's Cem. He was Assistant to General Manger of Pressed Steel Car Co. He was born on 31 March 1881 at Sterling, Rice, KS. He died on 21 September 1949 at Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, PA, at age 68.

He was christened on 17 August 1880 at Trinity Lutheran, Lancaster, Lancaster, PA. He married Maude May McCAULLEY on 16 June 1903. Warren Elwood ROY died on 1 January 1959 at Altoona, Perry, PA, at age 81.

     Anna Wallace RUSSELL was buried at Concord Presbyterian Church, Butler County, PA. She was born on 8 October 1828. She died on 26 March 1904 at age 75.

     He was in Capt. James McKinney's Co. of militia, 1st Batt of Bedford Co. Pa. Ref: DAR application #526075 He lived in the Big Bend Area in Emlenton R#2 PA, He was a farmer.

1800 Census: Head of family, Middlesex, Twp. Butler Co. Age 45+, wife 26-44, son and daughter 16-25, two sons 10-15, one sone under 10. Son James russell also listed there. Census p. 116.

First appears on Scrubgrass Twp. tax lists for 1815: Davel Rusle, 240 acres, 1 horse and 2 cows, total value $139. Son Caleb also listed, a single man. David continues to be taxed there for 240 acres through 1819.

He came from near Letterkenny Co. Donegal, N. Ireland, and lived Centre (not established until 1800) County, PA. A second cousin James (b. 1756) came from the same place and worked on David's farm and in 1795 married David's daughter Jane. When she died of childbed fever in 1813, David took in and raised two of her children, James and Catherine.

David died intestate and his 250 acre farm in Scrubgrass, Twp. was sold for $1700.²

David Russell, who settled in Scrubgrass township upon the lands now owned by the Middleton family, was a soldier of the Revolutionary war. He was a native of Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania, and married Isabel Harper of the same county, who bore him seven children: James, Samuel, David, John, Caleb, Jane, and Catharine, all of whom are dead.³ David RUSSELL was employed. He was born in 1746 at Letterkenny, Carnagil, Ireland. He married Isabelle HARPER, daughter of Samuel HARPER, before 1772 at Westmoreland Co., PA. David RUSSELL died on 23 October 1826 at Emlenton, Venango, PA.²

     Ellis RUSSELL died at Fairview Twp., Butler County, PA. He was born on 22 May 1824.

     Isabella RUSSELL was buried at Paririe Cem, Harrisville, Butler County, PA. She was born on 8 March 1815. She died in 1854.

James RUSSELL married Agnes (Nancy) CUNNINGHAM, daughter of Robert CUNNINGHAM and Agnes (Nancy) DILL, on 5 March 1811. James RUSSELL died on 28 December 1841 at Hooker, Butler County, PA, at age 68. He was buried after 28 December 1841 at Concord Presbyterian Church, Hooker, Butler County, PA.¹

     Ann BAKER was buried at Middletown Friends, Chester, PA. She was employed. Will dated Sept. 2, 1779. No date for proof. Names Daughter Ann Cannady, Mary Noris, Martha Houlston, Sons George, Richard. Grandchildren, Ledy Sill, Sarah Canady. Exrs. Brother Nehemiah Baker and son James, Lydia Baker, Joseph Robins. She was born on 18 August 1703.³ She married James SILL, son of John SILL, circa 1721. Ann BAKER died on 16 July 1798 at Edgmont, Delaware, PA, at age 94.

     John RUSSELL was buried at Red Brick Pres., Mariasville, Venango, PA. Had five children.
Served in War of 1812.¹ He was born in 1787 at Near Mariasville, PA. He married Martha McGINNIS circa 1825. John RUSSELL died on 9 March 1872 at Richland Twp., Venango, PA.
