Obituary of Daniel C. Ritchey, Adams County Free Press, early June 1908
The funeral of the late Daniel C. Ritchey, probably the oldest Mason in the State of Iowa, was held at Corning last Tuesday. He was a former Henry County man that will be remembered by some of the oldest residents here. He joined the Masonic Lodge in Mt. Pleasant in 1847 and always kept his membership here. Mrs. Joseph Willis of the city is a sister of the deceased.
Sunday evening, May 31, at 7, the spark of life passed from Daniel C. Ritchey at the home of his daughter, Mrs. H. P. Davis, caught by old age in the machinery having done its work.
Mr. Ritchey had passed the four-score and ten, earthly existence allotted to but few men. He was born in Clark County, IN, near Jeffersonville, 26 Oct 1817, and when about ten years of age moved with his parents to Warren County, IL, where he resided many years. During the rage of the cholera epidemic in the early 30s, his father died of the disease and was buried near what is known as Sugar Tree Grove. Later the subject of this sketch came to Iowa and located in Henry County where he was married to Martha McDowell, who died in Corning 29 October 1894, a few months after they had celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. To this union were born 7 children, six of whom are living: Mrs. John Campbell, Avoca, Iowa; Mrs. Frank Cochran, Kearney, Nebraska; Mrs. H. P. Davis, Corning; Mrs. Mike Sullivan, South Omaha, Nebraska, Harvey Ritchey, Corning; Mrs. H. S. Maine, Brooks, Iowa; surviving sister, Mrs. Joseph Willis, Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.
Mr. Ritchey served in scout duty during the Black Hawk war, though too young to be enlisted. He was buried in Walnut Grove Cemetery, 90 years, 7 months, 5 days, age 90 years.-
Additional info: He moved to Adams County (Quincy) in 1855 and then to Corning. He boarded men engaged in the surveying of the proposed railroad line down the "Nodaway." The approach of the war ended the railroad operations. Mr. Ritchey then went to Colorado for two years, then back to Corning, where he was the proprietor of the old three-story hotel across from the jail.
He was known as the "Father of Corning, IA," according to Iantha Baker. Married by Judge George K. Stover. He was born on 26 October 1817 at Jeffersonville, Clark County, Indiana.3 He married Martha McDOWELL on 2 July 1844 at Washington County, Iowa.4 Daniel Carmichael RITCHEY died on 31 May 1908 at Quincy, Adams County, Iowa, at age 90.3

David S. FINDLEY1
M, b. 1803, d. 8 January 1880
RootsWeb's World Connect Project, Findley Family Tree Entry 20706, Submitter Gerald Findley (findley@@juno.com): "One other interesting story on tracking things down -- couldn't find out where or when David Findley (1803) had died. My cousin in New Era had told me that he had died during a storm, similar to the Columbus Day storm that had struck Oregon in the early 1960s. I called the weather bureau, and they only had records that were more recent. Then I found a book on Clackamas County, where it mentioned a severe storm that occurred on January 8, 1880. I went to the Salem Archives, which had a death index for Oregon, and there he was, listed for that date. The family couldn't get him to the cemetery because of the storm, so he was buried on their property in New Era -- the marker is no longer there. During the Columbus Day storm, an old mulberry tree on the property was split in half, but is still standing and quite massive. That tree was one of several that were brought from Illinois by the Findleys, to be planted on their claim in 1847. Penny 2ellen@@home.com Info from Janalee Garn, 5/2002. According to "Illustrated Historical Atlas of the State of Iowa," A. T. Andreas, 1875, Elizabeth was the first white child born in Washington County. Other records indicate that her name was Isabelle or Isabella (History of Washington County, Iowa, p. 336). Since Isabel doesn't appear on the 1850 Census, Wayne Twp., Henry County, IA, with her mother and siblings, it would appear that it was she who died young.
Elizabeth did not immigrate to OR with her family. Elizabeth RITCHEY was born on 14 September 1833 at Warren County, Illinois.2 She died on 9 April 1915 at Washington County, Iowa, at age 81.2
