STERLING - Howard R. Chennell. 68, Sterling, died Tuesday at the Sterling Community Hospital after a short illness. Born Feb. 4, 1899, at Sterling, he married Katherine Roy June 15, 1921, at Hutchinson. He was a retired employee of the Ford Motor Company.

Member: Methodist Church, San Jose, Calif, Sterling Masonic Lodge; Isis Shrine, Salina.
Survivors: Widow; son, Howard R. Jr., Shawnee Mission; sister, Mrs. Melvin Haley, Columbus, Ga; brother, Dr. Jack, San Jose, Calif; three grandchildren.

Services Friday For Howard Chennell

Howard R. Chennell, a lifelong resident of Sterling, died unexpectedly at the local hospital Tuesday night at the age of 68.
He had undergone surgery ten days previously, but had been released from the hospital Sunday and was believed to be making good recovery.
A descendant of one of the town's earliest families, Howard was born here on February 4,
1899. For a time the family later lived at San Jose, Calif. He was married June 15, 1921
to Katherine Roy of Sterling and the couple had lived here continuously since that time.
He was graduated from San Jose High School and was also a member of the Methodist church there.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Isis Shrine, Salina. He was employed many years as head of the parts department of the Vandever-Welch and later the (Howard) Welch Motor company, a Ford agency here. I
Surviving are his widow; one son, Howard R. Chennell, Jr., 5450 Aberdeen, Fairway, Kansas, copy chief on the Kansas City Star; a sister, Mrs. Melvin Haley, Columbus, Ga; and one brother, Dr. Jack Chennell, San Jose, Calif; three grandchildren, H. R. Chennell III, Grahame Chennell and Elizabeth Chennell.
Friends may call at the Porter Sillin Funeral Home after noon Thursday.
Services will be conducted at 1:30 o'clock Friday at the Porter-Sillin Funeral Home by the Rev. John Biegert of the Colonial, Church in Prairie Village, Kansas
The family suggests contributions to the Sterling Community hospital.
Burial will be made in the Sterling Community Cemetery.

However the report of her son's death was false. Other data says she died

According to Helen Christy Blackwood, she came to this country with her sons from Ireland and settled in Cherry Twp. but no documentation is offered. Apparently there was not husband with her. She was blind. The farm was known as the Allison homestead between West Sunbury and Moniteau. Howard Allison was the last Allison to own the farm. She was born circa 1769. She died on 28 March 1851.

Apparently his brother James Russell was signed to enlist, but after he got in, it was discovered he really was too young. To send him home someone had to take his place and Kerr took his place. He enlisted at the age of 21, Nov 20, 1861. Mustered in Dec. 7, 1861 as a private at Camp Orr, PA. Height: 5' 9" Hair: Black. Complexion: Dark. Eyes: Gray. Occupation: Farmer. He was missing in action and presumed killed at Fair Oaks on May 31, 1862 and has a stone in Pleasant Valley Cemetery at Moniteau. Never married. Tombstone states: "Nathaniel K. son of R.P. Allison, who was lost at the Battle of Fair Oaks May 31, 1862, aged 21 yrs. 8 mo. and 10 days." He was buried at Pleasant Valley Presbyterian, Cherry Twp., Butler County, PA. He was born on 21 September 1840 at Pennsylvania. He died on 31 May 1862 at Fair Oaks, VA, at age 21.

1850 Census lists him, aged 39, Nancy aged, 32, Nathaniel C. (10), Eliza T. (8), Charles S. (6), James R. (4), Martha (1), and Jane (80). George Allison, aged 37 is on same page.

According to family legend, he met nancy Dill Russell at a wedding while she was too young to marry, announced that this was the girl he was going to marry and "he kept his word." He married Nancy Dill RUSSELL, daughter of James RUSSELL and Agnes (Nancy) CUNNINGHAM. Robert P. ALLISON was born on 25 May 1811 at Pennsylvania. He left a will on 9 April 1851 at Butler, PA; The following will of Robert P. Allison has been transcribed from the copy of the original located in the Butler County Court House, Butler County, Pennsylvania. The original was written in Kuntsler Script as is below. In an effort to make this as close to the original as possible, all spellings within the text are as are found in the will. Beside the signature of Robert P. a seal of sorts was scribbled in the shape of an oval.
