Soc. 199: Contested Sexualities Field Studies Component
{Email message from Gina on 1/22/99:}
Hi all,
Just a few words about the homework assignment. Although
the tangible project this time is to have a webpage on your BOL account,
the technical skills we have covered in class should be practiced so you
won't forget the next time we meet. Basically, do not wait until the last
minute to do the homework because problems will arise and you need to have
several tries before you know exactly what you're doing. Those of you who
left early and didn't get the part on sending/uploading html files, please
check up with me so you know how to do this uploading by next class. I
will briefly go over it because we need to learn to edit using Netscape
Composer next week.
Below is a revised direction on sending files. I also
want to add in addition to a small paragraph about one important idea/concept
you got out of the readings/discussion/lectures thus far is to INCLUDE
the day and time of your TA section and to let me know which website you
would most be interested in investigating and analyzing. Give me in order
from 1 to 3 with 1 being your first choice.
Maria, please do the earlier assigment #1 by looking for
sites on hate groups such as White Aryan Nation and other race or sexual
supremist groups. Please try to pick sites that belong to popular organizations
or groups that we have heard of--where there is a following--instead of
an individual's site that is really obscure.
HOMEWORK FOR WEEK 2 REVISED
Did you know that Microsoft Word 97 can create webpages?
Try it out by creating a regular Word file. Don't add pictures or tables
for simplification sake. Of course, if you know what to do with them, then
go ahead and experiment. When you are done, resave the file as an HTML
file and call it "assign2.htm". The topic for this week is to check in
with you and see how you are comprehending the assigned readings and class
discussion. Write a short summary of one important point/idea you got out
of this week's readings or discussion. Re-save the file as an HTML file.
Upload/Send this file to your student account and call it "assign2.htm".
Have this up by next Wednesday Noon, 1/27. I will check your website for
this webpage called assign2.htm. Please make sure you are using lower-case
letters and that the extension ends in "htm" and NOT "html". Our computer
system is sensitive to this and will make the distinction that will give
you a headache. If you can't figure out how to change the extension then
just use MS Word's defaulted extension. Be sure to rename the file once
you upload it to the server though. that way, we will be consistent with
using lower-case letters and the extension "htm".
Here is the revised direction on sending the hwk file to your account.
After you have re-saved your Word file as an HTML file, do the followings:
Open WS-FTP95 Program or its earlier version. {if you do not have this program in your personal computer, you can download it for free by finding its download site and follow the direction}
Select "New" button to create a new setting.
Deselect Anonymous Login
At the Profile Name, type in: "personal" and save it.
Next time when you use WS-FTP, you just select "personal" and won't have to reset the connection configuration.
At the Host, type in: www.ben2.ucla.edu
At the Host Type, select "Automatic Detect"
Type in your username and password.
Select "Apply" button to save this personal setting.
Select "Ok" to connect your local computer to your account on the server.
You will be connected to your personal BruinOnline space.
On the left is information about your local drive.
On the right is about your BOL space on the school server.
Nothing may be there at the moment if you have never used it.
On the left column, Find your local drive and your assign2.htm file.
Press the "-->" (forward) arrow button.
You have copied the file from your local drive and sent it to your personal account.
Go back to the browser.
Go to: www.ben2.ucla.edu/~userid/assign2.htm
Congratulations, you have uploaded your file assign2.htm
to your BOL account!
have fun experimenting…
