Soc. 199: Contested Sexualities Field Studies Component

Week 3, 1/28/99

Agenda

  • Logistical matters:  topics for websites and discussion sections
  • Editing a webpage
  • Homework

  • HOMEWORK FOR WEEK 3

Use the the guide from the "Editing This Template" hand-out to practice and familiarize yourself with editing a webpage using Netscape Composer.

Use the template and re-edit it to create a new webpage with the file name "assign3.htm" and upload this to your account. I will browse this file from your account site and evaluate your work.  Again, this is due at NOON on WEDNESDAY, 2/3.

Your webpage should consist of the following:

  • A title heading for the webpage (your website topic), the webpage title (H1, using the same title as the title heading).
  • An intro paragraph telling the reader what they will find in your page. For this webpage, I want you to have the list of websites based on your interested topic and a brief self-description for the authors' profiles that will go at the end of the class resource webpage--our final project. You can use pseudonyms if you are not comfortable with using your real names.
  • Use tables and subheadings to create a list of anti and pro -queer sites.  For example, have a subheading with the title of your topic followed by a colon that indicates whether the list of sites to follow are pro or anti -queer.  Then, use a three-column table with each row being a separate site. The first column will be the name of the webpage and the organization behind this site. The second column will be the linked URL of that webpage. The third column will be a brief description about the site. Note that you already have this information from the hand-out in class. The list of possible websites are also updated and can be found on the discussion board.
  • Use the horizontal bar to separate the list of websites section from the self-description section.
  • Have a subheading for the self-description section.
  • Include in the brief self-description paragraph your (pseudo)name, major, year, interest on this queer matters and expectations of this webpage project.
  • Have an updated section with the new time and your name and link (should already have from template).
  • Have at the top and bottom of your page, a Navigation Bar (already have from the template).
  • Change the file name in the Orientation Bar at the top of your page right after the navigation bar (already have from the template).

  •

HINT: If you do not have access to Netscape Communicator, you can maximize your time by typing in the text on Word. When you get to school and have access to Netscape Communicator, you could just cut and paste from your Word file to your new Netscape file. Once you are done editing, make sure you named the file "assign3.htm" and upload it to your account.

NEXT WEEK: Once you have the basics down (knowing the limitations of this project due to time and resources available), we could begin to talk about how we want the webpage to look like by looking at my proposed sample.htm.
