Week 2, 1/21/99

Agenda

  1. Quick Review and Expansion of Last Week
  2. Uploading/publishing webpages
  3. Homework: Group coordination.
  4. Administrative matters

REVIEW

FILE MANAGEMENT:

1) Viewing files on your disk.

2) Creating directories and subdirectories.

3) Copying, Moving, Deleting files.

Webpage:  A special type of text file that has links or hypertext markup information that act similarly as footnotes of a regular text file. When your cursor is over the link and you click on it, you will get more information about that marked text or picture.

Here are four examples:

1) Say, you happen to mention about the Human Rights Campaign organization but do not wish to say more about it in your own document. At the same time, you do want to give reference of this organization to your reader, you could make the name into a link which would connect your webpage to the homepage of the HRC organization.

2) You could also make links with images. For example, I could use the HRC logo as a link: HRC logo

3) Your HTML file could also have links to other files in your own account. For example, my Field Studies Homepage has links to the files (webpage): sample.htm and glossary.htm.

4) You could also a link that acts as a bookmark and shortcut to jump through your long file. For example, check out the assignments link in my Field Studies homepage.

Website: When we say website, we usually refer to a location of the homepage of an organization or of a person/group. For example, the website of HRC is its main homepage at http:www.hrc.org. At this website, the homepage has links to its own webpages (HTML files) and other websites.

Using Search Engines such as Yahoo, Excite, Lycoos, etc.

SAVE
Saving a webpage. Has HTML codes that can be viewed by selecting "Page Source" under the View Menu.

HOMEWORK FOR WEEK 2

Did you know that Microsoft Word 97 can create webpages? Try it out by creating a regular Word file. Don’t add pictures or tables for simplification sake. When you are done, resave the file as an HTML file and call it "assign2.htm". The topic for this week is to check in with you and see how you are comprehending the assigned readings and class discussion. Write a short summary of one important point/idea you got out of this week’s readings or discussion. Re-save the file as an HTML file. Upload/Send this file to your student account and call it assign2.htm. Have this up by next Wednesday Noon, 1/27. I will check your website for this webpage called assign2.htm.
