    Reminder

I will be teaching you many technical skills which you are expected to learn and apply. I will not test you on the technical aspect of this class. However, you are expected to apply these technical skills so that you can create a webpage with resources such as analyses of other websites. So, if you do not understand something, please ask question right away. This class does not have a textbook for you to look up information although I will be handing out guide sheets to help you along. You are welcome to research information on the web as well. I welcome those who know more about the web to give me inputs on how to better our webpage and help other students in this experimental project.

    Basic Concepts:

    UCLA system: PC_A ------ Server_X ----- PC_B

    Internet: Server_A ------ Server B -----Server C

    You and Internet: Mac_A ----- School server ----- Other Servers ----- Mac_B

You can think of the internet as a means to transfer information from one computer to another.

Webpage:  information stored in a HTML (hypertext markup language) file that is usually stored on a server and can be accessed to be viewed, copied and/or downloaded.  Each UCLA student who signed up for a BruinOnline (BOL) account has a limited amount of space on the UCLA server where they could upload HTML files.  This means each of you can create your own webpage for friends to view.  (For more info on HTML, check NCSA Guide on basic HTML.)

We need programs to view and transfer webpages or HTML files. (e.g., Netscape Communicator, Microsoft Internet Explorer, WS-FTP95).  In this class, we will use Netscape Navigator to surf the web, Netscape Composer to edit webpages, and WS-FTP95 to upload/transfer and manage web files.

URL is a webpage address. You need to tell people where to find your information. URL consists of 3 parts: scheme, host, path. SCHEME can either be http:// or ftp:// indicating webpage viewing or file transfering, respectively. The HOST is the server's address. The server hosts many computer users and their sets of information. The PATH is the specific place where a user's files are stored. For example, http://www.ben2.ucla.edu/hochiminh/home.htm means that the file "home.htm" can be found at the server ben2.ucla.edu by following the "hochiminh/home" path. (hochimih/home.htm = path)

    SURF
    Open Netscape Navigator
At the blank "Go to:" line, type in "yahoo"
At the blank "Search" line, type in "matthew shepard"
Click on any of the highlighted sites you are interested on and visit them.
You can go back to this page by clicking on the "Back" button on the menu bar.
If there is a site you really like and will visit often, you can bookmark it instead of having to write down and memorize its URL.
    Go to your favorite site.
Go to the "Bookmarks" icon in the menu bar and select "Add bookmark"
    Go to some other site.
Now go to the Bookmarks icon and select your favorite page.

    SAVE

Click on the link "Project Sample".
Go to File Menu and select "Save As".
Pick Drive A and rename the file as "final_project.htm".

    Click on "Choose File..." button.
Find the file "final_project.htm" in your Drive A.
    Select it and open it.
You now have a duplicate of the file sample on your Drive A but in a different name.

    SEND
Try: Uploading files onto your BruinOnline personal space.
    Open WS-FTP95 Program.
    Deselect Anonymous Login
At the Profile Name, type in: "personal" and save it.
At the Host, type in: www.ben2.ucla.edu
At the Host Type, select "Automatic Detect"
Type in your username and password.
    Select Ok.
You will be connected to your personal BruinOnline space.
Nothing may be there at the moment if you have never used it.
On the left column, Find your Drive A and your final_project.htm file.
Press the "-->" (forward) arrow button.
You have copied the file from Drive A and sent it to your personal account.
    Go back to the browser.
    Go to: www.ben2.ucla.edu/~userid/final_project.htm
You should see the same page you had called upon earlier from the class account.

    Congratulations! Have fun surfing!

    HOMEWORK FOR WEEK 1

Find 3 anti-queer sites and 3 pro-queer sites that you think would be of interest to analyze.  Try a variety of sites.  For example, one on gays, one on bisexual, one on transgender, one on christian, one on hate group, and one on ex-gays.  You are welcome to work with other students on this assignment.

Copied the URLs of these 6 sites and email them to me by Wednesday noon of next week, 1/20.  Include the titles or names of the sites and write a few sentences (< 8 sentences) briefly explaining what the sites are and why you thought it may be of interest to analyze it.
