The site created by the Family Research Council expands to provide information on current issues, congress, family policy, court cases, the happenings at Washington, family: friends and foes, opportunities with the FRC, and has a guest book for people to sign. The site also has a section that is devoted to laying out the basis of their beliefs. The Family Research Council expands, defines, and supports their anti-queer beliefs. The FRC refers to research done by the Christian Research Institute, an ally of the FRC. In order to justify their anti-queer stance, they promote the myths and stereotypes of queers. The FRC has an essentialist view of homosexuality. They believe that queers are not born queer, instead they are raised queer due to unfortunate circumstances. They believe that homosexuals experienced painful childhood’s, and turned to homosexuality as a means to coping with their problems. They do not see homosexuality as being a positive means of dealing with ones problems, and offer help. The FRC believes that homosexuals can be cured. Their description of homosexuality is similar to a pathology. They claim that when the American Psychiatric Association decided to take homosexuality out of their manual of pathologies, that this was not in actuality what most psychologists believe. Their research shows that many, if not most, psychologists do not believe that homosexuality is normal or natural. They support their beliefs of homosexuality being a pathology by quoting psychologists who feel the same (without any research).
The Family Research Council refutes the statements that are currently published saying that there is a 10% queer population in the US They believe that the study that supports the 10% theory is flawed. The FRC believes that the study surveyed an unrepresentative sample of the US population. They claim that many surveyed were prisoners, and that prisoners have more homosexual activity than others. The FRC correlates prisoners and homosexuality in order to easily claim both to be socially deviant. People assume that all prisoners are socially deviant, and by claiming that homosexuals are overly represented in the prison population infers that homosexuals are also socially deviant. Their beliefs are also detrimental because by associating homosexuals and prisoners, people wrongly fear homosexuals as being more likely to commit crimes that would end them up in prison. The FRC wants people to fear homosexuality as a disease, and by relating prisoners to homosexuals, they have instilled that fear in many people. The popular myth of homosexuals being pedaphiles and perverts is given more credence after the correlation of prisoners and homosexuals. Prisoners have consistently been profiled as pedaphiles and perverts, and the fact that homosexuals are overly represented in a prison population, reaffirms the myth of homosexuals being perverts and pedophiles. The correlation of prisoners and homosexuals is also a way in which the FRC clearly defines their order perspective. They believe that they are higher up in the social order due to the un-natural rare pathology of homosexuals.
The Family Research Council relates all deviant behavior (as defined by their Judeo-Christian value system) to homosexuals. All the wrongs of the world are placed on the shoulders of queers. The FRC preaches intolerance of queers, by instilling fear in people. They promote the belief that once somebody is a homosexual, they are more likely to commit other socially deviant acts, because it is in the nature of homosexuals. They perpetuate the myth that homosexuals are promiscuous and therefore are not living a healthy life. The FRC believes that that promiscuity leads to diseases such as AIDS. Thus perpetuating another myth that AIDS is a “gay diseases.” They claim that sexual practices of homosexuals are unhealthy (referring to anal and oral sex). The FRC believes that anal and oral sex are morally wrong, because of their belief that the act of sex is about procreating. The Family Research Council condemns homosexuals because they do not have sex to procreate. The FRC believes that all sexual acts that are not meant to help procreate, are deviant. This is a method by which the FRC is able to clarify their stance on morally appropriate sexual acts. By relating anal and oral sex to solely homosexuals, they are making a stand against anal and oral sex. The Family Research Council is efficient is depicting the homosexual as having all the immoral characteristics, according to their Judeo-Christian interpretation.
The Family Research Council has been referred to as homophobic. Thus, in their research, they redefine the term “homophobic.” They claim that the term has been misused in everyday life. They do not want to be labeled as having an “irrational fear” of homosexuals. They claim that there is a difference between those that fear homosexuals, and those that do not agree with their lifestyle. The FRC do not fear homosexuals, because they feel that they are morally superior to the deviant homosexuals. The FRC clearly do not want to be labeled homophobic due to the negative connotations of having an “irrational” fear. The FRC believes that they have a legitimate fear, as supported by their beliefs of homosexuals. The Family Research Council continuously reasserts the “fact” that there exists a large population that believes that homosexuality is wrong as they do. They create a safe environment for intolerance. They lead people to believe that the majority of people, of all professions, believe rationally that homosexuals are deviant.
The basis of the FRC’s stance against queers are available on this site, in order for people who question their beliefs to understand why they believe as they do. The FRC is very explicit and try to show support for their beliefs because it is critical for them to have people believe their beliefs in order for them to push their political agenda. The FRC’s mission is to restore the traditional “American” family. According to their interpretation of the Judeo-Christian value system, homosexuality is wrong and should be stopped. Thereby justifying their anti-queer legislation that they propose and support. This allows them to work against the acceptance and understanding of homosexuality, as part of their moral obligation. They lead people to believe that it is their duty as a moral being to be opposed to homosexuality.
The Family Research Council’s site along with the details and reasons behind their beliefs, is filled with information on current legislation. They perpetuate the idea of the homosexual agenda, being that of destroying the traditional “American” family. They provide their interpretation of current issues, and take a strong definitive anti-queer stance on legislation. The FRC is a conservative organization that pushes for change to the traditional ways of life. The FRC promotes and supports Republican views. Their allies are composed of other conservative, white, middle to upper class organizations. Their adversaries are those organizations that are pro-queer and pro-diversity. The FRC lists pro-queer corporations and tells people not to support their products, and to write the head of the corporation with their disapproval. The FRC is a large organization with much support from other conservative organizations, and are determined to reinstate the traditional “American” family.
The Family Research Council views homosexuality from an order and essentialist point of view. They believe that homosexuality is not natural and therefore not normal. They label queers as deviant, and promote the idea that queers possess many deviant characteristics, that may be dangerous to society. Their ideas are unfortunately completely unsupported with any evidence. Their claims are filled with false facts, fear, and hatred. Their arguments, do not address any of the questions that people have. They merely go around the issue and avoid answering the question, because they do not have any facts. They support their beliefs by quoting professionals who are experts on such areas. Unfortunately the quotes are unfounded on fact, merely presented as an opinion. The FRC is a strong organization that continually presents the viewers with “American” symbols. Leading people to believe that their beliefs are the “American” beliefs. The entire site is inundated with images of American flags, eagles, and the capital in order to make people believe that their beliefs are those of an “Americans.” Unfortunately for the Family Research Council, the “American” way is not their way. The “American” way is not that one of a white, upper to middle class, Judeo-Christian.
