As part of the new Religious Right, the Christian Coalition, differs from traditional conservative groups since their primary issues are not government spending and fiscal responsibility, but rather they focus on denying gays and lesbians civil rights, banning access to abortion, teaching creationism in schools and eliminating the separation between church and state. The Christian Coalition is largely made up of Republican voters and politicians, while the liberal left with whom the are embattled with in the cultural war is made up of Democratic voters. Its actions to recruit Republican Christian and Evangelical voters are carried out in the name of God. The Coalition's website offers prayers that include lines such as "we have ridiculed the absolute truth of Your word and called it pluralism" that ask God's forgiveness for the sinful society that has emerged. It asks that God "guide and bless these men and women who have been sent here by the people of this state, and who have been ordained by You, to govern this great state. Grant them Your wisdom to rule and may their decisions direct us to the center of Your will."
The Christian Coalition views homosexuality as sinful and unnatural, taking an Order approach in regards to sexuality. It is supportive of the existing hierarchical arrangements of sexuality and works at maintaining heterosexuality at the top of the hierarchy. The Coalition and its supporters do not believe that heterosexuality is a social construction, but rather they believe and act on the assumption that heterosexuality is a natural state that God intended for men and women. They consider this view to be an unquestionable truth and that, by challenging it, society has sinned: "we have endorsed perversion and called it an alternative lifestyle" and must now ask for forgiveness: "we come here before You to ask Your forgiveness and seek Your direction and guidance."
The Coalition's website does not use outwardly hateful language. It's contempt for homosexuals is kept somewhat covert, using "pro-family" as a euphemism for antigay. Nor does it directly promote violence against homosexuals like many anti-queer websites. Instead, they encourage "conservative people of faith to participate in the democratic process" and help pass anti-gay legislature. The Coalition offers their supporters various ways to get involved such as "nonpartisan voter guides and scorecards, Religious Rights Watch and other newsletters, nationwide conferences and training seminars." The Coalition boasts a lobbying staff in Washington, D.C., affiliates in every state-more than 2000 local chapters, Action Alert postcards, phone calls, and email, Get-out-the-vote mailings and phone calls, all which promote anti-gay activism and thus, "save young people from drugs, violence, and sexual promiscuity." The website has many links to other anti-gay organizations such as the American Family Association and the Family Research Council, which lists the names of businesses with nondiscriminatory hiring policies.
Using patriotic images and language, such as a picture of Uncle Sam exclaiming, "I want you!" and "Politics is not just a hobby. ..it is your duty!" the Coalition website urges every loyal Christian American to join the Coalition's cause of maintaining a healthy, moral, family oriented society. Under the leadership of its Chairman and founder Pat Robertson who from early on in his career as a preacher has vowed to fight against homosexuals, pornographers, and feminists, President and businessman Don Hodel, and Executive Director Randy Tate, the coalition has launched the Families 2000 Strategy, a program that aims to recruit 100,000 volunteers to serve as liaisons between their churches and local Christian Coalition chapters in an effort to mobilize hundreds of thousands of pro-family activists by November 2000. The organization credits itself for helping elect hundreds of pro-family political leaders to local, state, and federal office, changing policy, and influencing decisions from school boards to the U.S. Congress.
The Coalition's website often resorts to scare tactics to recruit supporter. In The Culture War Begins In Earnest, Rod D. Martin writes that the liberal left has "destroyed American families, compromised our churches, tainted our media, corrupted our universities, burned down our inner-cities, addicted our children...and everything they did, they did in the name of some higher cause, and millions followed them to destruction." The Christian Coalition has successfully used scare tactics and a call to patriotism to gain a nationwide following.
