This section differs from the others in that it does not cover a core undergraduate class taught in the department. However, educational attainment is a key variable of interest in many different areas of sociology and as such, we have provided basic education-related resources below. These sources are not specific to any one subject-specific area and are meant to be as general as possible.
- US Department of Education, National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) offers several current or recent sources of information about schooling in the US.
- Education Statistics at a Glance Education Statistics at a Glance brings together data from several National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) sources including: The Condition of Education, The Digest of Education Statistics, and Projections of Education Statistics.
- The Condition of Education: 2000-2003 includes indicators that are compiled from the 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003 editions of The Condition of Education. Data are organized by subject area.
- Digest of Education Statistics, 2002 is another good source of summary data. Page offers data in Excel and PDF format. Includes summary graphs and charts.
- Projections of Education Statistics to 2013 provides projections for key education statistics, including enrollment, graduates, teachers, and expenditures in elementary and secondary schools and degree-granting institutions.
- Indicators of School Crime and Safety: 2003 provides the most recent national indicators on school crime and safety.
- US Statistical Abstract offers summary data on education, employment, population and numerous other topics. Data are in PDF format, but can be copied or input into Excel for analysis and graphing (see example below).
- US Census Bureau offers numerous data tables and graphs. Examples include:
- University of Michigan Documents Center, Statistical Resources on the Web, Education offers a comprehensive list of online data resources and reports on education.
- The World Bank offers a wealth of education-related information categorized both by country and topic. Examples include:
