This project aims to encourage and facilitate the use of hands-on data analysis in the courses taught in the Department of Sociology at UCLA. This website is designed to help faculty members enrich their teaching through the use of data in the classroom. We define "data analysis" quite broadly and have included not only tables and graphs but also maps and other non-numerical types of data. Nearly all of the resources provided here are simple and easy to use. Few require the use of statistical packages such as Stata or SPSS. Tables and graphs are in Excel or PDF format. All exercises that require special software use web-based software that is menu driven and quite easy to use.

We have designed this site with three types of users in mind:

We hope that the information collected here is valuable to teachers with little previous experience in data analysis as well as highly seasoned instructors looking for new resources (and, of course, everyone who falls in between).

This project is supported by an Instructional Improvement Grant Award from the UCLA Office of Instructional Development. It has been undertaken by Rogers Brubaker, Margot Jackson, Martin Kreidl, Peter Li, Vida Maralani, and Brian Min.

NOTE: This site is currently under development. Please send any comments to Rogers Brubaker (brubaker@soc.ucla.edu).
