1. GovHelperText is the text of the paper, "Government's Little Helper: Media Coverage of U.S. Foreign Policy Crises, 1946-1999." Dennis Chiu, a former UCLA undergrad now practicing as a lawyer in San Jose, is the coauthor. An earlier version of the paper was published in Political Communication in 1995. An updated version, based on additional cases, is being republished in Robert Shapiro (ed.) Foreign Policy-Making in a Glass House. The publisher is Routledge, 2000.

2. The file called "Index data prep" is an excel spreadsheet containing the raw data for the study. It is pretty self-explanatory. If you have questions, ask.

3. The file called "index syntax" is SPSSx Code that will run the data matrix in the spreadsheet to straightforwardly reproduce all of the tables in the paper.
