54. Minutemen are hot-launched, i.e., the rocket motor
ignites inside the silo and propels the missile out, so the silo must wide
enough so that the exhaust does not destroy the missile. MX's are cold-launched,
ejected from the silo by gas, and ignite outside, so they don't need the
extra space.
