43. In October 1966, the DF-2 (East Wind) missile flew
west (appropriately), from Jiquan, passing near Dunhuang (pop. 100,000)
and Anxi (pop 70,000) to its target point in Xinjiang. If it had become
confused about its direction it might have fallen on Lou-chan (pop. 1,500,000)
or Xining (pop. 900,000). In the early 1960s, a Polaris missile was tested
in full, with a nuclear explosion at the end of its flight.
