I went down to the city for a vacation one day
While a week in the city for pleasure to spend
While reading the paper I happened to find
Advertisements for men on the Margineau Line

There was Dutchmen and Scotsman and some Frenchmen to
They were all going down there to work for Bill Hugh
You could slip them a dollar while a ticket you would find

Oh we started to work on the very next day
While a dollar and tne I heard was their pay
I worked there six weeks and I summoned my time
I was ten cents in debt onto the Margineau Line

Oh I shouldered my turkey, took a walk on the track
I fell in with McGunner, and he ordered me back
With a smile on his face like an African lion
He said, "You'll strike number two onto the Margineau Line."

Oh the Chimineau girls, they were charming round there.
There were nights into the weeks that they were constant severe.

We danced still the sweat poured down from our clothes
And those rough shanty boards pulled nails from our toes
