Statement of Purpose:

The political theory community at UCLA has grown rapidly in recent years, with new faculty and students in the graduate program at the Department of Political Science, and increasing links with faculty and students in other departments. Ethos aims to support this community among political theory graduate students, by providing opportunities for graduate students to come together outside of classes to socialize, to discuss ideas, and to share their work with each other.

Activities:

One of our main activities is a reading and discussion group where political theory graduate students can discuss readings and present their own work. These meetings provide an informal and collegial setting for exchanging ideas. Students can either lead discussion of a journal article or other reading, or present and discuss their own work in progress, such as a field paper, conference paper, or dissertation prospectus.

Ethos has also held happy hours, luncheons, and ad hoc reading and writing groups, and we can also arrange speakers and special events.

Getting involved:

All current political theory graduate students in the Department of Political Science are members of Ethos. In addition, Ethos is open to graduate students in other departments with interests in political theory, as well as Political Science students with secondary interests in political theory. Ethos maintains a email list for sending information about upcoming meetings and other events.

We welcome all graduate students with interests in political theory to come to our meetings and activities and join in the discussions, and we also welcome volunteers who would like to lead discussion of a reading, present a work in progress, or organize another type of meeting or event.
