You have just read a very interesting book and would like to use some of this
information in your research paper. Here is the portion you would like to use,
but it is too long.
You are probably at least vaguely familiar with the editing process that
occurs in creating movies, television news, newspaper articles, and the
like. Exactly the same process applies in speeches, which must be edited
for both time and value (Smith, 1984:50).
There are shorter ways to say this. Which of these examples would be acceptable for a research paper, and why?
