The UCLA Center for Labor Research and Education's Labor Summer Internship Program offers students a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the Los Angeles labor movement, which is leading national efforts to promote social justice for working people. LSIP involves a supervised internship in a labor union or community organization concerned with workplace issues, along with a seminar in which students engage in intensive study of workers’ experiences and the labor movement’s past and present role in American society.

In the past, students have interned with unions and community organizations such as SEIU Local 1877 (Justice for Janitors), UNITE HERE Local 11 (Hotel Workers Rising), the Garment Worker Center, SOULA 2006 (Security Officers United in LA), IDEPSCA (Instituto de Educación Popular de Los Ángeles), and many others. Many students have found employment with these organizations after the program.

During the eight-week institute, classes meet every Monday, from 9 am to 5 pm at the UCLA Downtown Labor Center (near MacArthur Park in downtown Los Angeles). Students spend the remaining fifteen hours each week at their placement sites. The ten units of course credit are valid for the Labor and Workplace Studies Minor.

Financial aid is available to qualified UCLA students. All other students should inquire about financial aid at their home institutions.
