Data Archives Help Page

Availability

The data files in the ISSR collections may be freely used by faculty, staff, and students at UCLA.  Archive materials may be especially useful in coursework, teaching, research projects, theses, and dissertations. Data and assistance in using Archive materials is provided free of charge, however the Archive operates on a cost-recovery basis for photocopying and preparation of data onto distribution media (diskette, zip disk, CD-ROM, etc.)  Materials sent off campus using air mail, priority mail, or express mail services are charged to the receiver.

Data files can be used in the Archive via personal lap top computers, and can be used at campus computing facilities, such as at Social Sciences Computing.  In order to use campus facilities you will need an account from the computing center you choose.  Data files may be downloaded from the Archive web site provided users have a current, valid Bruin-On-Line account.

Access

In order to use the files you must be affiliated with UCLA as faculty, staff member or student. The files are for the sole use of UCLA faculty, staff and students, and may not be copied or retransmitted in any way.

The Archive collection of files can be downloaded from machines on the UCLA campus, provided you have a current, valid Bruin-On-Line account.  After you copy files to a local machine, you may make a copy onto distributable media (diskette, zip disk, CD-ROM, etc.) for your personal use only.

This web site provides links to several other major data suppliers.  In some cases you will need to contact the archive in order to retrieve the files.  You may be required to agree to guidelines under which data are provided.  The Archive staff will inform you about any access limitations or regulations associated with a particular file, however it is your responsibility to follow these regulations.  The Archive staff assume no responsibility for the misuse of data by any user.

Assistance

The Archive staff provides assistance in finding data useful for research and courses. We provide reference services to identify specific studies and in the use of study documentation.  We can answer questions about data file content, structure, and format.  We can provide advice on file transfer and file management techniques.

The data we supply is primarily raw data, though we do have SPSS and SAS system files in portable formats. In order to use data effectively in your projects you must process the data statistically using a Statistical Package.

The Archive staff does not provide statistical consulting, though we can provide some guidance on data management and description in a variety of statistical formats.   Additional consulting services are available on campus.
