Bulgaria

There are 31 regions in Bulgaria. The categories shown below in Latin characters are the categories of the REGION variable. Within each region, districts are coded with two digit codes ranging from 1-23. These are the codes for the variable DISTRICT. Within each district, cities/towns/villages are coded, with two digit codes ranging from 1-76. These are the codes for the variable CITY. The codes for districts and for cities/towns/villages (and also for regions) are shown in Cyrillic characters below.⁽¹⁾ For example, on the second page of the list (after a listing in Cyrillic characters of the 31 regions), "01. Blagoevgrad" is hand written. This is the REGION code. The upper right hand corner also shows the region, in Cyrillic characters, " 1 - ". The section heading within the boxed text is the DISTRICT name and code; in this case the first district is " 01 - " ("01 - Bansko"). The number in the third (right hand) column (within left and right panels) is the city/town code; in this case the first town is ". 001" ("gr. Bansko 001") and the second town is ". 003" ("s. Dobrenetsye 003"). Since the first digit of the city codes is always zero, it is dropped from the CITY variable, leaving two digits. The numbers in the left hand column of each panel are not relevant here. Sofia is divided into several REGIONS, corresponding to sections of the city. Within these sections, neighborhoods are distinguished, corresponding to DISTRICTS. Within neighborhoods, small areas are distinguished, corresponding to CITIES. Thus, the Sofia metropolitan area is divided into 37 geographical areas, which include a total of 898 cases. The LOC and PLACE variables were created by combining the two digit REGION code, the two digit DISTRICT code, and the three digit CITY code (in this case the initial zero was not dropped), and adding an initial 1 to distinguish Bulgaria. Thus, for example, a person whose first job was in the town of Bansko in the Bansko district in the Blagoevgrad region would have code 10101001 for variable LOC01. The Bulgarian coders assigned zeros when information was missing. Thus, a person who failed to report the location of his first job would have code 10000000 for LOC01, and a person who reported he worked in the Blagoevgrad region but failed to report the district or city/town would have code 10100000, etc. When the file was received, some fields were blank. These were assigned code -1 at UCLA.
