The
late Campbell Grant was the recognized expert in Santa Barbara
regional rock art styles. He was author of "The Rock Paintings
of the Chumash," "Rock Art of the American Indian," "The Rock
Art of the North American Indian" and numerous magazine and journal
articles on the subject of California and Southwest rock art.
Grant
was a Research associate of the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural
History for many years, and President of the Santa Barbara chapter
of the Archaeological Institute of America.
His
varied career included free-lance book illustration, teaching,
avocado ranching and painting. In 1960, Campbell Grant visited
a painted rock art site in the Santa Barbara area, and became
from that point on a dedicated scholar of the subject. His work
was supported by grants from the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural
History, the National Science Foundation and Wenner Gren Foundation
for Anthropological Research. The Rock Art Archive has in its
Collections an album of Campbell Grant's
original paintings, some of which were published in "The Rock
Paintings of the Chumash."
