Gathering Bids Farewell to Richard M. Leventhal
Director who shaped Institute for eight years leaves UCLA

R ichard M. Leventhal, who led the Institute for two termsas Directors, overseeing and initiating a development campaign that resulted in its renaming as the Cotsen Institute of Archaeology at UCLA, has stepped down to take a position as President and CEO of the School of American Research in Santa Fe, New Mexico. In June, members of the UCLA community, including Vice Chancellor Claudia Mitchell-Kernan, Provost Brian Copenhaver, Dean Scott Waugh, and newly appointed Interim Director Charles Stanish, gathered to honor Leventhal and to present him with the ceremonial trowel, the Institute’s highest award.

During his tenure as Director, Leventhal initated several successful programs such as the annual UCLA Maya Weekend (since 1994), the Cotsen Visiting Scholar Program (since 1999), and the Cotsen Seminar Program (since 1999). His vision and leadership drove the Institute in new directions, the impact of which will last long into the future. We will miss Richard and his energy and leadership here at the Institute but we know that his contributions to the discipline of archaeology will continue.
