Director's Message
The mission of the Cotsen Institute is reaffirmed as a new era begins

A new era of archaeology at UCLA started this past fall with the announcement of Lloyd E. Cotsen’s generous pledge to the Institute and with the change of name to the Cotsen Institute of Archaeology at UCLA. Having financial viability for the first time, however, does not alone create a new model of an archaeological research center for the future.

Starting this past fall, we have initiated a process of critically assessing each component of the Cotsen Institute in an attempt to find an integrated model of research and education. The end result of this assessment will be a clearer view of the function of each component of the Institute and a clearer view of how all these components fit together. We can then think about how best to fund these components to create some of the best research labs and educational programs in the country.

As we begin this process of evaluation and self–examination, it is worthwhile to re–examine and to state clearly the mission of this Institute.

Mission of the Cotsen Institute

The Cotsen Institute of Archaeology at UCLA has two goals: archaeological research and professional education.

The Institute seeks to promote and sponsor new archaeological work around the world including field research, laboratory analysis, and the dissemination of information to the international community of professional archaeologists and to the general public of Southern California.

The Institute seeks to educate the archaeologists of the future in new theoretical and analytical approaches and in new views of cultural heritage preservation and management.
