Early the next morning some of us went for a walk on the Canal Walk, which parallels the canal system near the James River. One of the original locks in the canal. On Canal Walk, looking west.

An iron hulled packet boat discovered deep in the silt. It is possibly the oldest of the boats thus discovered. Packet boats carried passengers, baggage and mail as far as Lynchburg, Buchanan and Lexington, VA. Laurene, Emily, Erik and Prof. Waugh on Canal Walk. Piers of an old bridge over the James.

The Tredegar Iron Works viewed from Browns Island. Gun foundry is in the foreground. When we got back, we visited the Virginia State House, which was directly across from our hotel. A bell tower on the state house grounds which was built in 1824. The bell was used to call out local defenders, notably on April 21, 1861 and on February 7, 1864.
