On day two, Prof. Gallagher started us at the Lutheran Seminary where he led a discussion about Robert E. Lee's options on July 2, 1863 and Longstreet's performance. Photo by JW. From the Seminary we followed Longstreet's march to his July 2, 1863 afternoon attacks. Near Black Horse Tavern we came to the hill which exposed his troops to view from the Round Tops. To get the view, the group had to climb into someone's front yard (with permission, of course.) - photo by Roy.

UCLA students exposed to view from Big Round Top. Photo by JW. At the top of the hill the troops were visible from the Round Tops. Porter Alexander's artillery avoided this problem by going around to the right. Longstreet countermarched several miles, delaying the attack by two hours. This is the scene that met Longstreet's troops as they emerged from the southern end of Pitzer Woods. Sickles 3rd Corps was occupying the Peach Orchard (center).
