Welcome!

On the pages that follow you will see a more or less chronological (and exhaustive) pictorial journal of our class's trip to Gettysburg as part of the UCLA Summer Sessions course, History 197G, taught by Prof. Joan Waugh. Prof. Waugh put together an extraordinary, in-depth look at the battle of Gettysburg, viewed from any number of perspectives. Over a four week period here at UCLA we studied not only the military aspects of the battle, including the decisions of the commanders and the subsequent controversies that surrounded them, but also the impact on the Borough of Gettysburg and its civilian population, and the way in which the battle and its participants were memorialized. Our academic study was followed by a two week trip to Gettysburg, Harpers Ferry, Richmond, and Washington D.C., where we were able to explore first-hand many of the things we had discussed in the classroom. Throughout the trip, Prof. Waugh interspersed opportunities for us to meet and hear from some of the leading experts on Gettysburg, including Prof. Gary Gallagher, Prof. Matthew Gallman, Gerald R. Bennett, Supt. John Latschar, Ranger Becky Lyons, Glenn LaFantasie, and Battlefield Guide Wayne Motts. She also arranged ranger walks and other presentations which rounded out a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Interspersed here with photos taken on the trip are black & white photographs taken at the time of the battle or shortly thereafter for comparison with the modern scenes. These were provided by Prof. Gallagher or were found on "way signs" on the battlefield or in town. Most of the photographs were taken by myself - I took over 1700 photos with my trusty Nikon 995 digital camera in an attempt to seize the moments and keep them forever fresh in my memory. Other photographs were provided by Roy Wunderlich and Prof. Waugh.

The photos are presented as "thumbnails," nine to a page. If you click on a thumbnail, a larger version is presented. You can move from one larger version to the next without returning to the thumbnails by clicking on the forward arrows. The panoramas are somewhat larger than the regular photos and may take some time to load if you a using a dial-up connection to the Internet (but I think they are worth the wait!) I have prepared both an "Executive Summary" for those with a modest interest in the subject matter, and an in-depth immersion.

I hope you enjoy this "memorialization" of UCLA at Gettysburg, 2001!
