COMMUNITY SERVICE
Co-sponsored a grant proposal for $10,000 to initiate a community partnership between Ujima Village, a housing community in South Los Angeles, and the UCLA Office of Residential Life. Participated in programs and tutoring sessions at Ujima (2002-present) and organized an undergraduate seminar on the history of the community and the history of Black Los Angeles in 2004.
Faculty Advisor, UCLA Amnesty International (2003-present).
Invited, sponsored, and facilitated visit of Rigoberta Menchú (Nobel Peace Prize Winner from Guatemala in 1992) to UCLA (November, 2001).
Participated in CONIC Conference in Teotihuacan, Mexico (October, 2001). CONIC (Consejo de Organizaciones y Naciones Indígenas del Continente) is a consortium of nine Native American groups from North and South America. The 5-day conference focused on the rights of indigenous groups and nations within nation states (October, 2001).
Organized CONIC Conference at UCLA (April 2000). Lisa Sousa (History, Occidental College) and I organized and planned a conference in Los Angeles on indigenous rights. The 4-day event invited nearly forty indigenous leaders and delegates from CONIC (Consejo de Organizaciones y Naciones Indígenas del Continente). The representatives addressed four major topics: indigenous autonomy and self-governance; land struggles; international trade agreements; and the status of the UN Treaty.
