Mr. Sabean

Religion in German Culture since the Renaissance

The first quarter will be devoted to introducing students to recent literature dealing with religion in German-speaking central Europe since ca. 1500. Weekly sessions are divided into two parts. All participants in the seminar will read the assignment for part A and take part in the discussion. Each week a student will be assigned to introduce the volume under discussion. Part B will consist of reports on a selection from the literature surrounding a particular problem.

During the second quarter, students will present research papers to the class. The grade for the course will be based on the research paper and its defense. Credit for the course may only be obtained by satisfactory completion of both quarters.

While fluency in German is not expected, this course is only open to students who have some preparation in the language.
