TECHNOLOGIES HELPING TO CREATE ACCESSIBLE LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS

 

In a discussion moderated by STEVEN NELSON, art historian, director of the African Studies Center, and co-leader of EPIC’s inclusive classrooms seminar, RACHELLE CROSBIE-WATSON, MICHELLE LIU CARRIGER, and SUSANNE LOHMANN will demonstrate how they have used technology to foster inclusion and engage issues of diversity in their classes. Crosbie-Watson, professor of Integrative Biology and Physiology and Neurology, a member of the Brain Research Institute, a campus Distinguished Teaching Award winner, and co-chair of the recent Strategic Planning group focused on Academic Innovation will draw examples from PS 121: Disease Mechanisms and Therapies. Professor Carriger from Theater, Film and Television will discuss goals achieved and lessons learned from Theater 107: Drama of Diversity that she coordinated and designed with other faculty from her department. Professor Lohmann will explain how "It Takes All Sorts to Make a World: Teaching civics by embedding students in a massively multiplayer game of life" based on her experiences with Political Science 115D, Diversity, Disagreement, and Democracy.
