FALL
History of Public Health in the United States (HS 231): This graduate seminar will examine the history of public health within the broader context of American social and political history, and relate historical issues to current problems in health policy. Topics include conceptions of illness and health; health care providers; health care institutions; health care insurance; public health agencies in a democratic society; and health care reform movements. The Evolution of the Health Professions in the 20th Century (HS 250) (Lewis)
WINTER
"Sex, Lies, and Scientists": the Scientific Construction of Gender and Sexuality (HIS 197F/201F): This seminar will discuss the ways in which culture and politics have shaped the scientific and medical differentiation of gender and conceptualizations of sexuality and the impact of scientific and medical theories on social thought and practice. Topics will include anatomical, psychological, hormonal, and genetic definitions of gender; changing constructions of homosexuality and heterosexuality; and the history of sexual medicine. (Meldrum)
SPRING
History of Medicine (HIS 3D): This course will focus on the intellectual, social, and professional developments of modern biomedicine from the 18th century to the present, and will include discussion of the internalization of disease, from the holistic body to the individual cell; the rise of the germ theory; reforms in medical education; the development of antibiotics and chemotherapy; the building of the biomedical research infrastructure; alternative practices and therapies; and the crisis in health care delivery and financing of the late 20th century. Women and Health Care in the United States (WS 125): This course will examine in depth the various ways in which American women provide health care in both paid and unpaid capacities and how the political, economic, and social context of health care affects women recipients. (Meldrum)
