For the 2004-2005
academic year, fees have been assessed at $7,478.50 for three
quarters. Non-resident tuition for out-of-state residents or non-resident
aliens is $14,694 per year (Registration
fees and non-resident tuition are subject to change).
State residency can be established after living in California
for one continuous year. Once residency is established, a student
is exempt from non-resident tuition and pays only fees.
Financial Assistance
The Department offers a number of fellowships to incoming students.
Fellowship packages normally grant four or five years of funding
(with various combinations of fellowships and teaching assistantships).
To maintain their support packages from year to year, students
must show satisfactory progress in the graduate program.
We highly recommend that all applicants
apply for other forms of financial assistance, such as work-study.
External grants, etc. information can be obtained from the UCLA
Financial Aid Office located at A-129J Murphy Hall, (310)206-0440
(http://www.saonet.ucla.edu/fa.htm).
Teaching Assistantships
and Other Departmental Support:
Teaching Assistantships are not available to first-year graduate
students. Students can apply at the end of Winter quarter of their
first year for Teaching Assistantships effective the following
year.
Those who begin the program without
fellowship packages are eligible to apply for Research Assistantships
through an individual faculty member upon arrival. Graduate students
may also serve as paid Readers for undergraduate lecture courses.
Readers are responsible for grading a portion of student papers
and exams.
In addition to these Departmental
Awards, we strongly encourage students to apply for external awards
such as Fulbright, Ford etc.
