E Wired with an LED, potentiometer & switch.

Schematic of an LED, potentiometer & switch.

The LED and resistor are wired between digital output (+5 volts) and ground. The long lead on the LED must connect to +5 volts.

The potentiometer has two leads that span a fixed resistance. The fixed resistance must be wired between +5 volts and ground. The third lead is a moveable tap that slides across the fixed resistance. The tap must be wired to analog input. Never wire the tap to either +5 volts or ground.

The switch is wired between the digital input and ground. Polarity makes no difference.

The following color conventions are common. However, they are not always followed. Double check the wiring before connecting the component to the board.

RED = +5 volts
BLACK = ground (0 volts)
YELLOW = an intermediate voltage for sensors

These 3, 16 and 20-pin connectors
make quick and easy project
connections to the 2, 8 and 10 screw
terminals on the EZIO board.

You will have to cut off
every other pin. Made by
Capital Advanced Technologies
and available from Fry's.

Ohm's Law:

E = I * R
energy = current * resistance
volts = amps * ohms
for example:
5 volte = 15 milliamps * 330 ohms
5 volts = 20 milliamps * 200 ohms

Power Law:

P = E * I
power = energy * current
watts = volts * amp
for example:
75 milliwatts = 5 volts * 15 milliamps
100 milliwatts = 5 volts * 20 milliamps
(compared to your 60 watt lamp)
