Art and Aesthetics of Artificial Life

A future shared with cyborgs: Sentient and emotive creatures, conscious and thinking aliens of our own creation. Artificial Life is a new beginning, and is both the subject and medium of an unprecedented form of art. Based on self-generating, self-organizing, learning and evolving algorithms, a seed of Alife Art is nurtured, through growth and reproduction, by the artists' selective vision. Artificial Life explores themes of the origin and evolution of life, the existence of life in other-than-carbon based media such as silicon, the dynamics of chaos and complexity, and the phenomena of emergence. Alife reserachers cook in "wetware" kitchens creating "primordial soups" of DNA, RNA and other molecules. They write and evolve the personalities of "software" agents, whose habits are lifelike, and whose habitats range from your laptop computer to the global Internet. They assemble autonomous robotic "hardware" to explore harsh alein terrains from Earthbound sewers and battlefields to Martian low and highlands. Reflexively, they fold processes back upon themselves creating "hybridware" computers of DNA to solve combinatorial problems in mathematics and silicon hardware that evolves by reconfiguring itself on the fly. Artificial Life is a fresh perspective on the intimately blurred relationship between ourselves and our technology. Concepts of life, of self, and of machine are tightly intertangled, on this the dawn of our "posthuman age."
