Yet another cancelled show... so nice, they cancelled it twice. First on the UPN network (which has since been cancelled, itself) after only five episodes, and then on Comedy Central’s Adult Swim. Fortunately (for the time being), Comedy Central is streaming some complete episodes online, so you can see them for yourself. They tend to plug it in to their TV lineup at pretty random times, so unless you have a DVR, you’re unlikely to catch a rerun “live.”
The show centers on three kids (Brendon, Melissa and Jason) who make home movies. While there are many other supporting characters on the show, the highlight of the show is one of the most fully-realized, entertaining characters to come out of a cartoon in recent decades: Coach John McGuirk.
Frankly, I can see why the show was cancelled: the initial shows used the super-annoying “Squigglevision” animation technique, causing headaches and rapid-channel-changing among many viewers. The show is also quite dialog-heavy and has a really annoying tendency to indulge in overblown, alienating musical numbers by minor cast members.
That said, the dialog generally sparkles and entertains. The movie references are sharp and insightful, and once they ditched the squigglevision, the animation is actually very effective (if somewhat crude).
