Andy Richter (Doesn’t) Control the Universe

If he did, Fox wouldn’t have canned his show after only 19 episodes. They’re re-running them on HDNet, so you have a second chance to appreciate the show.

The show’s main device is a series of short mental visualizations (Richter is a frustrated writer working as an office drone whose fantasies serve as commentary and escape from his daily drudge) is similar to other shows like Scrubs, Herman’s Head, and (shudder) Ally McBeal, but uses the technique for good, not evil. Richter is affable, but flawed, and is supported by a great ensemble (except for Irene Molloy). The writing is exceptionally sharp and unpredictable, and doesn’t take cheap or easy shots. Paget Brewster, in particular, is great as one of the few TV bosses (other than Newsradio’s Jimmy James) for whom one would actually like to work. She’s sort of the anti-Michael Scott.

I’m not sure they could have kept up the quality over several seasons, but the 9.5 hours they did manage to crank out are golden.
