UCLA Social Science Education in Asia (SSEIA)
Social Science Education in Asia (SSEIA) is a new outreach program of the Division of Social Sciences designed to connect with student populations beyond the UCLA campus. The program offers credit-bearing UCLA General Education (GE) and introductory courses to highly-selected international students who are interested in attending university in the United States.
Jinling High SchoolThe UCLA classes are taught in the students' home country and will enable them to enhance their training in the social sciences, better prepare for American higher education, increase their competitiveness in university applications, and begin to accrue degree credits toward their American Bachelor's degree. A Faculty Advisory Committee appointed by the Dean of Social Sciences oversees the program.
Justin Zackey (Ph.D. 2005, UCLA) gives a lecture on Geography (Yi-Fu Tuan)The academic year 2011-2012 marks the second year of the SSEIA program, in partnership with UCLA Extension. During the year, GE courses in Geography, Economics, History and Political Science are taught to 50 12th graders at Jinling High School, a top-ranked school in Nanjing, Jiangsu (a province of 75 million people). The first year, 2010-2011, was very successful, with all of our 50 students going on to study at US universities.
The Division of Social Sciences plans to expand the program to other parts of Asia and beyond Asia.
