Asian American Studies
Interdepartmental Degree Program (IDP) Major

This major is ONLY open to students who declared Asian American Studies BEFORE Fall 2005.

Inderdepartmental Degree Program (IDP) Major Course Requirements:
The Asian American Studies (AAS) Departmental major requires fourteen (14) courses.

Two (2) core (lower division) courses:

AAS 10 or AAS 10W; AND
AAS 20

Twelve (12) upper division courses*:

One (1) research methodolgy course
Two (2) AAS theme courses;
Two (2) AAS populations and communities courses;
Two (2) comparative race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality courses;
Two (2) historial, cultural, social, and political institutions of Asia courses**; AND
Three (3) AAS or IDP electives.

*All courses must come from the approved IDP major course list.
*No more than two (2) AAS contract courses (AAS 195, 196, 197, 198, 199) can be applied to the major. AAS 192 and AAS 196 CANNOT be used to fulfill major requirements.
**A maximum of three (3) courses can be taken from the historial, cultural, social, and political institutions of Asia subfield for the IDP major.

7:7 Ratio
Of the fourteen courses listed above, seven (7) of must be Asian American Studies courses. The remaining seven (7) courses must interdepartmental courses (IDP).

In other words, the seven 7 IDP courses must be taken from a department or program outside of Asian American Studies. IDP courses are therefore classes that are not offered by Asian American Studies. These 7 courses make the AAS and interdepartmental major.

Asian Language Requirement:
In addition to the fourteen (14) courses above, the IDP major also requires year one proficiency (quarter level 3) of an Asian or Pacific Islander language. The language requirement can be fulfilled in one fo the the following ways:

coursework at UCLA; OR
coruse work at an accredited junior college, university, or UC Extension. Coursework MUST "transfer" in to UCLA as equivalent of a quarter level 3 of UCLA Asian language course; OR
UCLA placement exam. Student must place into quarter level 4 (that is, exceeding quarter level 3) of an Asian language.

All courses for the major must be taken for a letter grade.
