Interview Project

This is the last assignment/project, which will count as your second midterm/exam. You will need more than one week to set it up and do it. It’s good to start as early as possible.

This project can be either done individually or in group (see below):

Individual Project: Interview with a jazz musician

A. Find a jazz musician willing to give you a 30-minute interview. Explain to him or her that this is for a class project and no portion of the interview will be made public or published without first obtaining written permission.

WORKING WITH HUMAN SUBJECTS. All the recommendations made for your other project are at work here as well in terms of the respect and care needed when working with people (what research universities call "human subjects" or "research subjects"). If you don’t remember or are not familiar with the precautions necessary when working with human subjects for any kind of research, go back to Project One and read the sections on "Informed Consent" and "Behavior as a researcher."

B. Prepare a set of questions based on the readings and class discussions and performances.

C. Carry out and audio tape the interview (minimum 30 minutes).

D. Carefully transcribe 20 minutes of it. (see transcription conventions)

E. Write up 500 words on what you see as the most interesting and revealing part of the interview (make sure to explain why by connecting it to the readings and the class discussions, with and without guests).

Hand in:

1) The list of questions you had prepared (even though you may not have managed to ask them all); (typed)

2) a copy of the tape (specify if you are handing in the original and make sure to pick it up from Prof. Duranti’s office during his office hours or by appointment at the beginning of the next quarter)

3) the transcript (typed).

4) the 500 word statement (typed).

MAKE SURE TO WRITE YOUR NAME ON ALL PAGES.

DUE as specified in the syllabus.
