The Culture of Jazz Aesthetics Anthropology 148a: Language and the Culture of Art Instructors: Profs. Kenny Burrell and Alessandro Duranti Spring 2004 / Tuesday 11-2PM / SMB 1343 Seventh Assignment [Updated May 25, 2004] This assignment (for jazz musicians and everyone else) is due ,typed and double spaced, in class AT THE BEGINNING of next meeting (Week 9), (DO NOT SEND IT VIA E-MAIL). LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL NO LONGER BE ACCEPTED. Make sure to include YOUR NAME and MAJOR at the top of each typed page. Using as a model the three developmental stories found in the article I distributed in class (Ochs & Schieffelin, Language acquisition and socialization: three developmental stories), write up a possible developmental story for a jazz musician. The basic assumption is that in music socialization the process of becoming a musician is affected by the process of becoming a member of a given society (e.g. the community of jazz musicians or the jazz world), which implies the sharing of a culture. In turn, the process of becoming a member of the jazz community is affected by the process of acquiring the technical skills and the taste of a musician. Total number of words: 500 (You can do this individually or with another student in the class) (total number of words for two students: 800). |
