Fifth Assignment: Jazz developmental stories

For this assignment you need to:

1. Read the article by Elinor Ochs & Bambi B. Schieffelin, "Language acquisition and socialization: Three developmental stories." (originally published in Culture theory: Mind, self, and emotion, ed. by R Shweder & R. LeVine. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press; reprinted in Linguistic Anthropology: A Reader, ed. by A. Duranti).

2. Pay particular attention to what constitutes a "developmental story" for Ochs and Schieffelin.

3. Look through your class (ethnographic) notes and find examples of references to life experiences and crucial moments in the development of our guests as jazz musicians (e.g. information that would tell us something, anything, about how they started playing jazz, what inspired them at different moments, what attracts them to jazz, how they learned, what they learned where and from whom, etc.).

4. Look through the readings so far to find examples of developmental stories (or parts of it).

5. Summarize your findings (you can do this assignment in collaboration with another student in the class).

This assignment is due ,typed and double spaced, in class AT THE BEGINNING of our next meeting (Week 9).

Make sure to include YOUR NAME and MAJOR at the top of each typed page.
