This assignment is divided in three parts. If you did not participate in part of the class or for whatever reason you could not catch part of the discussion, you can watch a video of the part of the class with guests available in the Powell Media Library starting Thursday morning.

1) Provide a brief definition of modulation as used by Gerald Wilson and explained in class.

2) Briefly describe some differences between playing in a small jazz combo and playing in a big band (or jazz ensemble) as the ones conducted by our guests, Gerald Wilson and Frank Capp.

3) Briefly describe the parallel development of the following instruments: tuba, bass, banjo, and guitar, as discussed during the second part of the class on May 11, 2004. (For jazz musicians: add names of well known recordings as examples).

(You can do this individually or with another student in the class)
