Fourth Assignment

[Updated April 26, 2004]

This fourth assignment (for jazz musicians and everyone else) is due ,typed and double spaced, in class AT THE BEGINNING of next meeting (Week 5), (DO NOT SEND IT VIA E-MAIL). LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL NO LONGER BE ACCEPTED.

Make sure to include YOUR NAME and MAJOR at the top of each typed page.

FOR JAZZ MUSICIANS (AND ANYONE ELSE WHO WOULD LIKE TO TRY IT OUT). Starting from the metaphor of improvisation as conversation as discussed by Ingrid Monson in the third chapter of her book Saying Something, analyze one song in one of the following records:

  • Miles Davis. Kind of Blue
  • John Coltrane. Giant Steps
  • The Essential Charlie Parker.
  • Make sure to utilize some of the key concepts introduced by Monson (e.g. enhancing vs. obliterating a solo, multiple voices, participation framework, listening, saying something, musical style, musical syntax).

N.B. The metaphor of conversation is also used by Paul Berliner in his book Thinking in Jazz, in case you happen to have a copy nearby.

(You can do this individually or with someone else in the class)

FOR EVERYONE ELSE IN THE CLASS. After reading through the first three chapters of Saying Something by Ingrid Monson, (1) identify all the words, expressions, concepts relating to music that are obscure to you. (2) Organize your findings in a list. (3) Check to make sure that they are not explained in the Glossary you received during our first class. (Anything you find in the Glossary should be eliminated). (4) Next to each item in the list write down the kind of work that you think you would need to do as an ethnographer to acquire the knowledge necessary to understand the item.
