Third Assignment

Form a group with other students in the class (3-5 students). Each group should include NO MORE THAN ONE jazz musician.

Consult anthropology textbooks, monographs, or articles to find definitions of different forms of social organization (or social systems). In particular, find (and photocopy) at least one definition of: (1) egalitarian social system; (2) hierarchical (or stratified) social system .

Using the definitions you found, write up a (preliminary) anthropological description of the social organization of jazz combos (NOT of Jazz Ensembles or Big Bands) based on (i) the readings for this course (ii) your notes from class interaction among musicians and between musicians and the class, and (iii) any other resource you might be able to have access to, including your own knowledge and experience as well as the knowledge and experience of experts and novices you might be able to contact. Make sure to show that you are consistently matching the criteria based on the definitions you found in the anthropological literature with the data you gathered (e.g. observations in and outside of class, answers to questions, literature on jazz, etc.)

An important premise of this assignment is that the answer is not obvious and experts do not necessarily have an answer without serious thinking and analysis of their own behavior and experience.

Number of words: 250xNumber of people in the group. Make sure to include the photocopy of the sources you are using. (The number of words in the quotes you may include in your answer do not count for the final count).

This is NOT meant to be an ESSAY. It's an ANALYSIS. We are not interested in something that is written well but has little content or shows little depth of analysis.

This assignment is due , typed, double spaced, in class at the beginning of next meeting (April 27, 2004) (DO NOT SEND IT VIA E-MAIL).

Make sure to include ALL THE NAMES of the students in your group on the Front Page and at the top of each typed page.
