Second Assignment

This assignment is designed differently for students with different backgrounds. The next one (assignment # 3) will be a group assignment on the rhythm section and you will be able to draw from your own expertise and the expertise of others in the class.

FOR JAZZ MUSICIANS ONLY. Evaluate the theory of improvisation outlined in Chapter 1 of Creating Conversations. Improvisation in Everyday Discourse. by Keith Sawyer with your own experience improvising while playing jazz. (500 words)

FOR EVERYONE ELSE IN THE CLASS (two parts).

Part 1. Compare your experience listening to Bobby Rodriguez and Tom Ranier playing together in our first meeting and listening to Kenny Burrell playing today by himself. Write as if you were addressing a reader who was not in the class. (250 words)

Part 2. What did you learn about the role of the guitar in jazz from listening to Prof. Burrell perform and talk about playing the guitar in different eras and different settings? (250 words). (If you decide to rely on the opinion of an expert, including jazz musicians in the class or outside, make sure to identify him or her by name and area of expertise).

This assignment is due , typed, double spaced, in class at the beginning of next meeting (April 20, 2004) (DO NOT SEND IT VIA E-MAIL).
