Anthropology, the broadest of
the social sciences, is the study of humankind. One of the strengths of
anthropology as a discipline is its "holistic" or integrative
approach; it links the life sciences and the humanities and has strong
ties with disciplines ranging from biology and psychology to linguistics,
political science, and the fine arts. Anthropological study is appropriate
for people with a wide variety of interests: human cultures and civilizations
both present and past, human and animal behavior, particular regions of
the world such as Africa, Asia, Latin America, Oceania, etc. Established
in 1941, the department grew to prominence immediately after World War
II and has consistently ranked among the top ten departments in the country,
both for the distinction of its faculty and the quality of its teaching.
Many faculty members actively engage in research and teaching in two or
more fields, and many hold joint appointments in other departments and
schools at UCLA.
