AAS 119: Asian American and Pacific Islander Labor Issues

ASSIGNMENTS

UCLA Student Consciousness Assignment
(due by Feb. 3)

Expanding Your Consciousness as an AAS Student Leader

This assignment is due by our class session of Feb. 3.  This assignment involves both a short written report and an oral presentation.  This assignment may be done individually or in small groups of no more than five students.

In our class session last week, I mentioned that to do each of the class projects well students needed to do two important things.  Neither of these two important things was identified by students during our first class writing exercise.  Thus, currently both may lie outside of students’ consciousness, and each student will have to work hard to expand consciousness.  1) Students need to expand their consciousness so that they can learn from immigrant workers, especially around critical questions facing young Asian Americans such as building interethnic alliances, redefining gender relations in our communities, and developing new models of leadership for our communities. 2) Students need to expand their consciousness so that they can recognize the great powers that UCLA students have to help our communities.

Write up a two-page paper answering the following questions.  Also be prepared to present ideas from your paper in class on Feb. 3.  Remember that this assignment can either be done individually or in small groups.

  1. During the next few weeks, how will you expand your consciousness to learn from immigrant workers?  What specifically will you do?
  2. During the next few weeks, how will you expand your consciousness to recognize the great powers that you as a UCLA student have to help our communities?  What specifically will you do?
  3. How will an expanded consciousness around these two points help you with our class projects?  In addition, how will an expanded consciousness help you develop your skills as a student leader?
